The Guru Smt. Sujatha Surendran, started learning dance from the age of 4 from her Guru, her own Aunt, Smt. Jaya Mani and continued under (Late) Mr. M.D. Venkatesh. After the demise of the Guru, she continued her dancing career and is the second generation disciple of the renowned Guru Padmasri (Late) K.N. Dhandayuthapani Pillai.
Her ardour for the performing arts is so intense that she is promoting the talent under the banner of Natya Kala Mandir an institution founded in 1986 in India and in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia.
Hailing from a family of artists & great art lovers Sujatha completed her Diploma in Bharatha Natyam and was the only one to pass in distinction from her college in Chennai. She is a proud recipient of the title “Natya Visharadha” by the University of Madras, India.
Sujatha received the Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence in Dec 2015 for her outstanding contribution and meritorious services in the field of arts to the community.
Sujatha has number of performances to her credit which includes Public & TV performances & has also choreographed many dance numbers. She has won scholarship under the talent promotion scheme to perform at many places in India sponsored by the Tamilnadu Iyal, Isai, Nataka Mandram, Chennai. Sujatha continues to hold aloft the glorious tradition left by her Guru, and her students are the proud torch bearers of the Dhandayudhapani Pillai tradition .
